Computer-Based Honors: Using Computing Technology in Scholarly Research since 1968.

The history of CBH begins in 1961 with The University of Alabama's establishment of its first computer center. One of the center's primary goals was to encourage the faculty and to rely more on computer technology in their research and instruction. Bright, motivated undergraduates were employed to help staff the center. These undergraduates received accelerated training in computer techniques and were then assigned to assist University faculty and staff with new and ongoing research projects. These students' greatest contribution, however, was teaching the researchers about the computer's capabilities. The experience was a great success for both students and faculty members. After learning about the program, the National Science Foundation granted funding to expand its scope. In 1968 the Computer-Based Honors Program (CBHP) was officially launched.
